How to Read a Certificate of Analysis
A field guide to scope, identity, quantitation, and the limits of a single laboratory document.

Start with the claim
A certificate of analysis is a report tied to a sample, a method, and a moment in time. It is not a universal guarantee about every unit carrying the same product name.
Begin by writing down the precise claim you want to evaluate. Identity, concentration, purity, and screening for specified contaminants are different analytical questions and may require different methods.

Check sample identity and traceability
Look for an unambiguous sample name or code, batch or lot identifier, receipt and testing dates, and the identity of the laboratory. A report that cannot be matched to the item under discussion has limited evidentiary value.
Also distinguish who collected the sample. A laboratory result does not by itself establish that sampling was random, representative, or independent.

Read the method and units
The named method, measurement units, reporting limit, and result format determine what the number means. A result below a reporting limit is not equivalent to proof that none of the analyte is present.
When uncertainty is reported, retain it. Apparent differences between two numbers may not represent meaningful analytical differences.

Treat the report as bounded evidence
Method suitability, documented sample handling, and sample representativeness limit what a report can establish. Use the report to support only the question it actually tested.
